Is Kratom Legal in Oregon in 2024?

It shouldn’t be surprising that in 2023 Kratom is legal in Oregon. The state has long been a progressive state regarding drug laws. It passed the first laws to decriminalize possession of heroin, cocaine, methamphetamines and other drugs for personal use. In this article, you’ll learn about how Kratom became legal in Oregon.

Kratom laws and legislation in Oregon

In 2018 there was a country-wide salmonella outbreak that resulted from some contaminated Kratom, and while not every state was affected, Oregon had two cases. As a result, state officials issued a statement warning people not to consume Kratom. Unfortunately, the number of instances later increased to eight, and then after that year, another three cases were reported making Oregon the state with the most Kratom-related salmonella cases.

In June 2022, Gov. Kate Brown signed the Oregon Kratom Consumer Protection Act into law. This is vital legislation for Oregon and shapes the path for federal regulations of the popular herbal remedy to keep all consumers safe. Among other safeguards and guidelines, the bill makes 21 the minimum age to purchase Kratom.

Purchasing and Shipping Kratom in Oregon

Kratom can be purchased at headshops, smoke shops and convenience stores. Or you can buy through dozens of online vendors. Either way, you must be careful when choosing where to buy your Kratom. Be aware that the U.S. government does not regulate this product, so buyers must research. Although buying Kratom locally is generally more expensive, one advantage is seeing the product before you buy it.  However, most reputable online suppliers offer a money-back guarantee if the product doesn’t meet your standards.

As for service and quality, online stores have the advantage here. Online stores typically have a fresher product, offer more variety, and the service personnel is generally more knowledgeable about Kratom products. As for convenience, you can get your Kratom quicker by picking it up at a local store. However, products from online sources are typically fresher, and online stores fast-track their shipments to get them to you within a day.

The American Kratom Association (AKA) is a non-profit advocacy group established in 2014, committed to preserving and protecting the freedom of Kratom or Mitragyna Speciosa. It advocates for continued regulation to ensure Kratom quality and also for increased research on the benefits of Kratom. The AKA continues to work tirelessly to have Kratom legal in every state. You can help in that effort by joining the AKA as a “protector” of Kratom. You’ll then receive notification of any changes to laws and any advocacy needed. The Kratom Consumer Protection Act

The Kratom Consumer Protection Act (KPCA) is legislation the American Kratom Association introduced that encourages advocacy for Kratom education and research. In addition, it sets legal guidelines for the industry regarding labeling, ingredients, and age restrictions. The Act prohibits the sale of adulterated or misbranded Kratom. The KCPA would also create a voluntary certification program for Kratom retailers and manufacturers.

The Kratom Consumer Protection Act is under consideration in more than 20 states, says a spokesperson for the American Kratom Association. The organization hopes many other states will soon join Oregon and the other seven states where versions of the legislation have passed as of 2023. The KPCA is now law in Oregon, Utah, Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Missouri and Oklahoma.
