Drug Testing for Kratom

So, you love your kratom but wonder if it can be detected on a drug test? How long is it detectable in a typical urine sample? Or in a blood sample? How long does kratom stay in my urine?

It’s important to note that even though kratom is legal on the federal level, state laws vary. Employers also have varying rights to say what drugs their employees may legally use.

That said, most drug tests don’t even test for kratom. However, they may detect the metabolites and flag them as another drug. Some scientists, however, have researched the elimination half-life of kratom’s primary alkaloid, Mitragynine. Mitragynine is believed to have an elimination half-life of around 23 to 24 hours. The elimination half-life takes 50% of the alkaloid content to be cleared from the body. The fastest half-life of alkaloids found in kratom is around seven hours. Using this timeline, it would take 1.6 days for kratom to be eliminated.

The longer-lasting alkaloids can take days to remove. Different types of kratom are on the market, and each kratom strain offers a different effect. The different types have different elimination half-lives. For example, some elimination half-lives of kratoms involve just a few hours, whereas others span several days. Note that each case is different, and the time it takes to metabolize kratom depends on several factors, including age, weight, dosage and tolerance.

Does kratom show up on drug tests?

The most basic (and standard) drug test is a urine test. This five-panel drug test typically screens for marijuana, cocaine, PCP, primary opiates (heroin, morphine, codeine) and amphetamines. From there, the tests can add barbiturates, benzodiazepines (tranquilizers), methadone, propoxyphene (opioid pain reliever), methaqualone (quaaludes), ecstasy, hydrocodone and oxycodone, demerol and tramadol, depending on specific workplace concerns. 

Kratom isn’t detectable on the standard five-panel drug test, but it can appear in blood or urine tests when specifically requested. In addition, a specific kratom drug test, known as the kratom 10-panel test, can detect kratom but is rarely requested. It’s important to realize that some drug tests can detect even the smallest amount of kratom. So, it stands to reason that the more one consumes, the more likely kratom could be detectable. The detection of kratom (or any drug) in the body depends on several factors:

  • Your age & your metabolism
  • The amount of fat in your body 
  • The amount you consume and when you last consumed kratom
  • The strength of the strain
  • The type of test used

Increase your metabolism to reduce the chance of kratom being detected. You can move kratom through your system faster by:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking 12 eight-ounce glasses daily, as kratom can be dehydrating
  • Drink caffeine, which is found in coffee, tea, and energy drinks, to increase metabolization. 
  • Consume protein-rich foods like eggs, meats, poultry, fish, and protein powder to increase your metabolism.
  • It may be counterintuitive, but getting more deep sleep helps burn more calories, increasing one’s ability to burn more calories and metabolize substances.

Does the federal gov’t currently ban kratom?

In the United States, kratom is not federally regulated. This means that no government body checks or guarantees the quality and safety of kratom products purchased in the U.S., including online. While the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has considered labeling kratom a controlled substance, it is still completely legal at the federal level.

Some states and municipalities have chosen to regulate kratom, while fewer have chosen to ban it. Can I use kratom if I serve in the military? 

As of 2022, kratom has been added to the Operation Supplement Safety list of Department of Defense prohibited substances. Their literature says that “kratom should not be purchased or consumed by any armed forces member.” Even so, a routine drug test by the Department of Defense will not generally test for or detect kratom. While kratom is not on the controlled substance list, it is considered by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to be a “drug of chemical concern.”

Since kratom is not a federally controlled substance, products containing kratom are sold legally within the United States. While the military does not explicitly test for kratom, military service members are prohibited from using any kratom product. Therefore, if you serve in the military, asking your commanding officer or human resources officer if kratom is approved is best.

Can professional athletes use kratom without fear of retribution?

Kratom is unlikely to cause a false positive in a generalized test, although interactions between Benadryl or Prozac and kratom may trigger a false-positive result. Speak with a medical professional before taking over-the-counter or prescription drugs while taking kratom. If you take an average drug test after taking kratom, metabolites may appear in the test as a different substance. This is often a flag for the test to be repeated or for a more extensive test to be ordered.

Can I play college sports and still use kratom?
