What is the American Kratom Association?

The American Kratom Association (AKA) is an organization that advocates and supports the use and sale of the herb Kratom. The advocacy group, founded in 2014, is dedicated to protecting, preserving, and promoting public access to Kratom in the United States. Currently, laws regarding Kratom in the United States are not uniformly determined. AKA works with state and local officials and congressional members to educate them about Kratom’s benefits and safety and to influence policies, laws and regulations on Kratom’s distribution, sale, and consumption.

They continue to work in each state to pass the Kratom Consumer Protection Act, which would require that Kratom products sold to meet a higher bar of product purity, establish labeling requirements, and limit sales to consumers of a certain age (18 or 21 plus). It is a much-needed step to put some regulations in place and increase the safety of consumers’ products.

What does the American Kratom Association do?

  1. Promote passage on state and eventually the federal level of the Kratom Consumer Protection Act,
  2. Educate the public and regulators about Kratom’s benefits and attributes of the natural herbal Southeast Asian plant.
  3. Protect consumer access to Kratom.
  4. Amplify the assenting voices who advocate for Kratom’s use.
  5. Educate and bolster awareness regarding Kratom on a global scale.
  6. Support the preservation of Kratom and its natural habitat as a natural resource.
  7. Advocate for reforestation and sustainable farming techniques.

How does the American Kratom Association Work?

They achieve advocacy goals through donations and volunteering. The tax-exempt organization operates under the 501 (c)(4) tax code. They advocate for the legal sale, consumption, and distribution of Kratom. More importantly, they also promote the safety, efficacy, and potential for the medical utilization of Kratom. These potential effects include enhanced alertness, improvements in mood, analgesia and alleviation of chronic pain, insomnia, and depression.

They also offer numerous publications and position statements by a consistent, small body of scientists and legal professionals. These publications or releases pertain to multiple subjects, including state and local legalities surrounding Kratom, health claims, Kratom overdoses and Kratom-related deaths and the validities covering these issues.

There continues contentious debate between members of the AKA and federal regulatory bodies, including the FDA, the DEA, and the NIDA, regarding the safety and efficacy surrounding the ingestion of Kratom. These drug and pharmacology federal regulatory bodies are dissenting voices against Kratom’s broad and unregulated use. They also provide updates, videos, and publications regarding congressional and state standpoints on Kratom’s use. The AKA promotes access to several scientific publications with peer-reviewed studies of the physiological effects of the Kratom plant’s various active alkaloids.

What is the American Kratom Association GMP Program?

The American Kratom Association works to improve the Kratom community. They have enacted standards for Kratom manufacturing, called the AKA GMP program. This codifies the best manufacturing processes for Kratom processors. After passing a strict audit, a Kratom company will get the AKA GMP seal.
