Kratom And Alcohol – Is it Okay to Mix?

Can you Mix kratom and alcohol? People take kratom for a variety of reasons. Fans of kratom have been known to use it as a pain reliever, an energy booster, or even a sexual stimulant. Of course, others enjoy the increased sociability or calm, dreamlike mental state that kratom may cause. Naturally, this has inspired many people to wonder if it’s safe mixing kratom with alcohol. When it comes to kratom and alcohol, though, there isn’t a clear consensus on whether combining the two is a good idea. We’ll explore the subject further here:

Are Alcohol and Kratom Dangerous Together?

First of all: alcohol can be a very dangerous substance in its own right. On average, six people die every day as a result of alcohol poisoning. And over 80,000 people die every year from alcohol-related causes. It is the third-leading preventable cause of death in the U.S. Abusing alcohol ––  with or without kratom –– is extremely hazardous.

On the other hand, there have been zero verifiable deaths attributed solely to kratom. Yet, an estimated 4-6 million Americans use kratom already.

Alcohol and Opioids

Alcohol is a depressant. In simple terms, this means that alcohol acts to lower neurotransmission levels, thus depressing stimulation in various parts of the brain. Conversely, kratom is believed to act on opiod receptors, and at low doses, kratom produces effects like a stimulant. Combining alcohol with opioid-based medications such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, or morphine can cause dangerously slow breathing and lead to a coma. However, it’s worth noting that there is no evidence to show that combining alcohol with kratom will cause such problems.

Alcohol and Kratom Side Effects

Nevertheless, users may experience a number of adverse side effects if they combine alcohol and kratom. Doing so may cause dizziness, facial flushing, sweating, nausea, or vomiting. So while there is no evidence to suggest that combining kratom and alcohol is dangerous, it still might not be a good idea from a strict enjoyment standpoint. Furthermore, some reports suggest that the combination of kratom and alcohol can contribute to painful headaches in the form of a hangover.

Kratom does not typically cause a “hangover” in the traditional sense. People who use kratom regularly for at least six months may experience withdrawal if they stop taking kratom completely. Some of those symptoms may include irritability, sweating, nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, and/or joint and muscle pain.

Important Kratom Facts

As we’ve established above, taking alcohol in conjunction with kratom may not be dangerous, but it’s not recommended either. As such, it’s worth noting a few important facts about kratom if you plan to use it regularly:

  • The effects of kratom may last between four-and-eight hours, depending on the size of the dosage.
  • Kratom begins to take effect after about 30 minutes.
  • Kratom may stay in a person’s blood stream for 3-4 days after initial consumption.
