Kratom Blends
So you’ve tried Kratom and loved it, but now you want to explore more. Specifically, you want to know more about the different strains and blends. So let’s start with some basics before we delve deeper into the intricacies of the various Kratom blends available on the market.
- What is the Kratom plant?
- What is the traditional use of Kratom?
- How do I find the best strain for me?
- What are the best blends?
- Can’t I make my blends?
What is the Kratom plant?
Contrary to much misinformation on the Internet, all Kratom originates from just one tree, the Mitragyna speciosa, a relative of the coffee family (Rubiaceae). It’s an evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia and cultivated primarily in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand for its historical medical and recreational uses. It can grow up to 80 feet. There has been written documentation of its use in herbal medicine since at least the 19th century. The main active components in the leaves are the alkaloids, Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, found only in Mitragyna speciosa.
What is the traditional use of Kratom?
Traditionally, in Southeast Asia, especially in Thailand, local manual laborers chew or make tea with chopped fresh or dried Kratom leaves to combat fatigue and improve work productivity. The effects of Kratom are generally dose-dependent. Small doses produce stimulatory effects resembling the stimulant effect of drugs such as coffee, while larger dosages tend to be associated with sedative and pain-relieving properties.
How do I find the best blend for me?
Probably the most asked question by Kratom users is how do I find the correct strain and blend for me? Unfortunately, the answer is not as simple as you may think. The leaf vein name comes from the color of the vein in the Kratom leaf. That changing color comes from the maturity of the leaf when harvested and the various drying processes. As the leaf ages, it changes color, and the alkaloids concentration and balance change, providing different effects.
The three primary vein colors are White Vein, Green Vein, and Red Vein. In addition, Yellow Vein, a newer specialty strain, undergoes a fermenting process. Blending veins can augment the effects. Here’s a breakdown of the four types:
White Vein Kratom – is produced from the youngest leaves and consumers report that the strain promotes focus, energy and motivation. Think of a cup of coffee in a capsule. Most refer to White Veins as fast strains. White Vein and Green Vein are high in 7-hydroxymitragynine ore and provide energy and focus.
Red Vein Kratom – is produced from the fully mature leaves and therefore contains a more robust alkaloid composition higher in Mitragynine (and less in 7-hydroxymitragynine). Even though Kratom has natural stimulant properties (related to the coffee plant), fermented red strains like Bentuangie provide restful sleep at bedtime. Overall, Red Veins generally offer a relaxing, sedative and analgesic effect. Most refer to Red Veins as slow strains.
Green Vein Kratom – Green Vein Kratom strains provide a hybrid effect – a little Red and a little White. Many say that Green Veins offer the best of both worlds, energizing and relaxing. Green Vein Kratom, a medium strain, is an excellent choice for the novice seeking mood elevation and helping with aches and pains.
Yellow Vein Kratom – Similar to Green Vein Kratom, Yellow Vein Kratom has a high mix of the two main Kratom alkaloids. This slight fermentation changes the properties of Yellow Vein Kratom and reportedly provides significant mood-elevating effects and an energy boost.
