Is Kratom legal in Iowa?
While Kratom is legal in Iowa, its legality hasn’t come without challenges. In early 2014, legislators tried to pass House Bill 2455, which proposed criminalizing Kratom. The bill would have classified Kratom as a Schedule 1 drug. However, a petition co-sponsored by the advocacy group, Change.org, galvanized supporters of Kratom, and the bill was defeated. So, for now, Kratom is completely legal throughout the state, and there are no limitations.
History of Kratom legislation
Kratom is legal at the federal level. However, states can make their legislation because the Food and Drug Administration does not regulate it. Six states—Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin—currently ban Kratom. Four other states – Arizona, Illinois, New Hampshire and Tennessee – restrict its sale and use by minors but leave the substance largely unregulated. Georgia, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma and Utah regulate Kratom to ensure its purity and safe use. The remaining states, like Iowa, leave Kratom unregulated. So, for now, Kratom is completely legal throughout the state, and there are no limitations.
